NUTS 1: FR7CENTRE-EST
NUTS 2: FR72 Auvergne
Start date: 01.01.1999
Type of initiative:  public
Description of the practice:

An important tourist traffic (500 000 visitors per year) concentrated on one site (for this example, on summit of the highest volcano of Cantal) can be guided by amenities, transportation and tourist centers in the whole territory (for example, in valleys and towns) in order to increase economic activity and preserve environment.

It's a public strategy dedicated to manage tourist traffic, develop economy and preserve landscape. All investments are public. Business development is an objective and will be a result of strategy.

Mountains area has been protected by law and national policy since 1970. Operation program was agreed by public stakeholders in 1999.
The main tourist information center called “le Pas de Peyrol” and located on the summit has opened in 2007.

The important tourist traffic of 500 000 visitors per year is concentrated on the summit of the Puy Mary (le Pas de Peyrol). It causes trouble for landscape and environment preservation. Consequently, the implemented sustainable development project has three main objectives :
- creating tourist information centres in order to have a better control of tourist traffic and promote landscape and environment preservation (one main tourist centre on the summit and four other centres in valleys),
- creating thematic paths network and public transportation system in order to connect tourist centres, towns…
- and increasing economic activity in whole territory (accommodation, restaurant...).

The monitoring structure is “Syndicat Mixte du Puy Mary” , it’s a public organization gathering elected people from local authorities as Cantal Assembly, Regional Nature Park of Volcans d'Auvergne and 13 villages. It is in charge of economic development and environment preservation of the protected mountains area called "Puy Mary".
