Description of the practice:

This network is the proof that old villages can be rehabilitated, integrating the villagers in an active process of proving product to have a restaurant working. Constituting an enterprise that provides the family and the village a starting point to promote their territory, not only by the quality and trading of their gastronomy but also by the natural landscape and biodiversity.

This network is connected to business development nearby natural and protected areas. The initial help came from European and national funds and the project’s idea was designed by ADRAT. The promoters have to respect the exterior appearance of the buildings and rehabilitate the interior following the initial idea and the traditional cooking.

A new type of restaurants called “Rede de Tabernas do Alto Tâmega”, a network of small typical restaurants created in cooperation between ADRAT and the Communitarian Initiative LEADER+. These restaurants, Tabernas, are architectonic traditional spaces of great interest that will provide good and high quality meals cooked in a traditional and singular way, characteristic of the Alto Tâmega’s region.

These restaurants, eleven in total, use products of their own production and only open with reservations. They are located in rural villages and each restaurant cannot have more than 50 clients. All restaurants are establish in rural buildings that already exist (wine-cellars, mills, farm warehouses, straw-yard, etc.), or rustic houses recently built for the establishment of the Alto Tâmega’s Tabernas. The equipment is designed in a way that assembles with the old tradition and ancient usages which features so well this region.

Some of these Tabernas include traditional games in their programme. On theses restaurants it cannot be used modern equipment such as TV sets, cigarette machines, machines, snooker tables etc, with the intention of promoting traditional entertainments for instance typical games. In order to make the visitors fit in the rural and farm environment, the surroundings of the restaurants follow the same specifications of the house.

Evidence of success
Biological/biodiversity values:

The majority of restaurants of this network are located in natural areas, with unique biodiversity and landscape.  Minimum impact.

Visual impact and recreational value:

The network is constituted by 11 restaurants from all over the 6 municipalities of Alto Tâmega, the network has a common logo and image that facilitates the recognition of these restaurants.

Cultural heritage:

The conservation of these old building transformed in restaurants with the gastronomy of the region is a cultural heritage with an added value of revitalizing the village by giving economic dynamism and tourist weight to rural and mountain areas.

Economic viability:

This network brought an economic added value to rural communities that have difficulties in fixing young population. The entire village gets involved and provides local products to the restaurant. The tourists that frequent the network often visit the villages and the natural and built heritage.

This Project is transferrable.
