Description of the practice:

A financialy viable socially inclusive community enterprise growing food for local consumption, providing space and workshops for new businesses and promoting healthy living.

Located on the edge of the Howey Village, in Mid Wales. Ashfields Community Enterprise have re developed a dilapidated local tree nursery into a thriving community owned market garden after receiving funding from the Village SOS scheme.
By clearing and renovating the grounds from weeds, repairing poly tunnels and populating them with crops; Ashfield’s is now growing food for local consumption. They specialising in growing hardy perennials which can survive in the cold and wet climate of Radnorshire; in addition they have also started selling cut flowers. Plants and crops are sold under the Ashfield brand. By selling crops to local businesses Ashfield’s is generating a strong customer base. The weekly market has strengthened local relationship, as a result local groups and individuals rent spaces to grow plants and crops on the site.
In addition Ashfield’s provides a location for community engagement and small business development, providing education and acting as a demonstration for low carbon living. Ashfield’s is the first Community Land Trust in Wales to deliver affordable housing for the community along with providing an income.    

Evidence of success
Biological/biodiversity values:

By redeveloping disused land, Ashfield's have created a new space for local people or groups to grow their own food and flowers. They are also developing ways of growing hardy perennials which can survive in the cold and wet climate of Radnorshire.

Visual impact and recreational value:

Ashfield's have made the land more asthetically pleasing through creating vegtable patches and flower beds. An orchard is now being established as an area where people can sit in an environmentaly friendly space, in addition to providing a pleasant and restfull place to sit and stroll.

Cultural heritage:

The work in Ashfield's gets completed by using traditional practices. Local prohjects are created by people having access to the resource for example Oral history project collecting older peoples traditional family cooking recipes which are tried out in the Ashfield Kitchen and may be used to create local food products as well as providing a social ointerest group.

Environmental impact:

Low. Plants and flowers are grown in the gardens at Ashfields and then sold to local people and businesses. Therfore the produce does not travel; having a low impact on the environment. Ashfields are also interested in generating low carbon energy.

Transferability:
The best practices could be transferred to others in Europe, as derelict land could be reclaimed, allowing local people and groups to grow their own produce. It shows ways to assist to sustain communities through social engagement as weel as providing opportunites for people without their own land to grow food and eat healthily.
